Black people have always been on the vanguard of sustainability. North Star takes inspiration from the sartorial vitality and ingenuity of people of African descent. All of the garments from this collection were made from recycled garments and deadstock textiles. This collection reclaims and reworks symbols of American identity like the stars and stripes in the revolutionary tradition of African American aesthetics. My design process is deeply rooted in my African American heritage and my research as a historian of slavery, notably drawing from the inspiration from the techniques of the Gees Bend quilters.
